Lilies Ball Music 2003

Hi there, my name is Katriana, welcome to an experiment in music distribution. Below are the dances that will be done at the Lilies Ball this year. Please print out the music to practice (and bring to Lilies.) If you would like a full set of music and have no access to a printer, email your name and address to me at calonkat @ yahoo.com (remove the spaces.) There is no budget for this, so please try to find a printer. If you have no email, my address is E Alden 1515 SW Gage Topeka KS 66604-2572.

File types:

Adobe Acrobat files can be read with Adobe Acrobat Reader Get Acrobat Reader
MIDI MIDI files should be playable on almost any computer with sound capabilities. In most cases I did not make the MIDI, but it should be the same arrangement as the music.
Noteworthy Noteworthy Composer files. Noteworthy is an inexpensive program that has a free player and allows you to make sheet music from MIDIs or from scratch.

General Notes

Unless noted, the top line is the melody. We are playing for dancing, not for beauty (although it is nice to have both) so we will want most people on melody.

Many of the MIDI files have no introduction, or a very brief intro. The MIDI's are not the definitive version, they are a sample of what the piece sounds like (and should be at roughly the correct tempo.)

If the music says to shift the line an octave down, and you can, that's great! If not, we'll live. The "right" way to play this is for us to put out music that is danceable.

Online sources I used to find files:

Del's Dance Book An outstanding resource with with music and video clips to go with the dance instructions.
Eric's SCA sheet music list On which the search engine stopped working for me, but I found lots of stuff first :-)

Cover sheets with dance lists & notes pdf file

Set 1

1.1 Gathering Peascods Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by David Yardley

Note: 3 times through the music is once through the dance (marked on the music)

1.2 Anello Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Monica Cellio
1.3 Rufty Tufty Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Kathryn Van Stone

Note: 3 times through the music is once through the dance. This is often done more than one time because it is short and fun.

1.4 Hearts Ease Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Kathryn Van Stone

Note: 3 times through the music is once through the dance (marked on the music)

1.5 Contrapasso in Due Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by DragonScale Consort
1.6 Official Bransle Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Russell Almond

Note: The chorus DOES repeat, and we probably won't do the dance 12 times :-)

Set 2

2.1 Jenny Pluck Pears Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Robert Stockton
NOTE: The second section (chorus) has longer note values, not a different beat, it goes "slower", but not the tempo.
Note: 9 times through the tune is once through the dance, not 3 times (the pdf music is wrong, MIDI is correct)

2.2 Basso Lauro page 1 page 2 / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Monica Cellio

Note: Music is same as Casuelle (Set 4)
Note: Melody is the Tenor line (La Spagna)
Note: One time through music is 2 times through dance
Note: Monica's original had an addition measure (measure 5) but is otherwise the same version. original

2.3 Bizzaria D'Amore Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by David Yardley

Note: 6 times through the tune is once through the dance

2.4 Quen Quer Que Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by P. Butler

NOTE: Sophia the Orange of Musica Subterranea has been kind enough to allow us to use their arrangement if we prefer.Adobe Acrobat

2.5 Black Alman Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Robert Stockton
2.6 Korobushka Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy / words Basic Arrangement by Phaedria

Note: This speeds up, Top line is melody, 2nd line is Alternate, other lines are accompaniment.
Note: Once through the music is once through the dance. Follow the tempos and drop out when you can't go faster. We will speed up BETWEEN verses, not during the verse (unfair to the dancers otherwise). Original folksong has 7 verses.

Set 3

3.1 Petit Vriens Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Monica Cellio
3.2 Maanshaft Pavanne Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. Unknown
3.3 Picking of Sticks Lavena / Picking Up Sticks / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Steve Hendricks
NOTE: You need two tunes, Lavena & Picking up Sticks.
Note: The order goes Lavena 7 times (as written, but without the end repeat); Picking up sticks 3 times (as written, but without the end repeat); Lavena 5 times (as written, but without the end repeat.) The MIDI should be correct, as is the Noteworthy file. The last section may run short or long, depending on how competently the dancers perform the final hay.

3.4 Rostiboli Gioiso Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Monica Cellio

NOTE: Middle line is the melody, most people will play this or the lower line.
Note: This is a couple dance, usually done twice (or sets of twice) so that each person gets to go first.

3.5 Gelosia Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Monica Cellio

Note: 3 times through the melody is one time through the dance. We will repeat it so the women can do the active part, so plan on playing through 6 times total.

3.6 Heralds in Love Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by P. Butler

Note: 3 times through the melody is one time through the dance. People usually enjoy this one so much it gets done twice. Often the second time is done faster and occasionally the Mickey Mouse theme is played on the third repeat of the second time through the dance.

Set 4

4.1 Grimstock Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Monica Cellio
Note: 3 times through the melody is one time through the dance.

4.2 Amoroso Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Monica Cellio

Note: We will do the first part 2 times, not 3, the MIDI is correct for the way we will play it at Lilies.

4.3 Casuelle la Nouvelle page 1 page 2 / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Monica Cellio

Note: We are using this arrangement for Lauro also.
Note: Melody is the Tenor line (La Spagna)
Note: Monica's original had an addition measure (measure 5) but is otherwise the same version. original

4.4 Ballo del Fiore Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. by Monica Cellio

Note: 4 times through the music as written is one time through the dance. It is very long :-)

4.5 Ly Bens Dystony Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. Dragonscale Consort

Note: 2nd line is the melody, there is no introduction on the music.

4.6 Female Sailor Adobe Acrobat / MIDI / Noteworthy Arr. Phaedria d'Aurillac
