Over the Sea

I sit in my castle protected by stone;
I fear for the day I'll be left all alone
I wonder what tidings are waiting for me
From my knight gone over the sea

I sat and I waited and counted the days;
I fasted and prayed, my chaplain amazed.
I wondered would news ever come for me
From my knight gone over the sea.

Where can I go when the night has fallen?
Whom do I see when the stars come out?
What shall I do when my knight has fallen?
Where can I turn when the light goes out?

One day as I sat and I stitched and I sewed,
I heard horses coming from far up the road.
I rushed to my window and looked out to see
Royal heralds from over the sea.

He fought well at Crècy; he died with the best
He fought with the King by a royal request
His King did him honor, his men said to me:
My knight is dead over the sea.

Where can I go when the night has fallen?
Whom do I see when the stars come out?
What shall I do when my knight has fallen?
Where can I turn when the light goes out?

His arms and his armor were taken by French
They loosened his rings from his fingers tight-clenched
And only his banner came home to me;
Came home from over the sea.

I sit in my castle, protected by stone
I yearn for the day I'll be left all alone
I wonder what tidings are waiting for me
From my knight gone over the sea.

Where can I go when the night has fallen?
Whom do I see when the stars come out?
What shall I do when my knight has fallen?
Where can I turn when the light goes out?
